Upfitting Newer Pickups After Bed Removal: Flatbed Upfitting Issues

Common Flatbed Upfitting Issues on Newer Pickup Trucks

Thinking about putting a flatbed on a late-model pickup? At ALE Truck Beds, we love building custom aluminum flatbeds that look sharp and perform flawlessly. However, modern pickup beds include many sensors and electronics. When you remove the bed, several problems can appear that no upfitter can permanently solve with wiring alone.

Below we clearly explain the most common flatbed upfitting issues, why they happen, and how to avoid them by choosing the right truck for your next build.

1. Hyperflashing Turn Signals

Symptoms: Rapid flashing or “bulb out” warning.

Cause: The truck’s body control module monitors electrical load on turn-signal circuits. When LEDs or new wiring change that load, the module interprets it as a burned-out bulb. As a result, the turn signals start hyperflashing.

Solution: We add the correct resistors or LED modules to correct the signal. The truck’s body control module creates the hyperflashing, not poor wiring. Therefore, proper parts and load matching fix the issue.

2. Park Assist Relocation

Symptoms: Constant chimes or “Service Park Assist” messages.

Cause: Factory parking sensors sit in the rear bumper. Consequently, removing or blocking them triggers faults.

Solution: In some cases, we relocate the sensors, but the new placement must match factory specs. Otherwise, we disable the system through the vehicle menu or with dealer assistance.

3. BLIS / Blind-Spot Sensors

Symptoms: “Service Blind Spot System” or disabled indicators.

Cause: Manufacturers often house blind-spot sensors and rear cross-traffic radars inside the bed corners or taillamps. When you remove those parts, you also remove the proper mounting locations. As a result, the system cannot function correctly.

Solution: Relocating these sensors reliably on a flatbed is impossible. We typically disable the system. In contrast, cab-and-chassis trucks avoid these pickup-only sensors entirely.

4. 360° Cameras & Tailgate Electronics

Symptoms: Missing camera views or loss of full 360° functionality.

Cause: The factory 360° system depends on every camera, including the tailgate camera, to create a complete image. Removing the tailgate disrupts the system. Additionally, the wiring connection at the tailgate may control more than just the camera feed.

Solution: We install a new rear camera on the headache rack or body when possible. However, restoring full 360° capability requires OEM integration, which can be costly.

5. Dashboard Warning Lights

Symptoms: Warning icons or error messages for missing systems.

Cause: Once you remove the bed and its wiring, the truck loses contact with the original sensors or modules. Therefore, the computer registers those as missing components.

Solution: Some warnings clear through settings, but others require a dealer to disable unused features. Even so, a few indicators may stay illuminated permanently. That is normal for a truck missing OEM components.

Other Common Flatbed Upfitting Issues

  • Trailer assist & camera systems: These often rely on factory tailgate cameras.
  • Tailgate harnesses: Power locks, dampers, and step modules go missing after removal.
  • Wiring dependencies: License plate lights, trailer camera ports, and bed lighting harnesses require rerouting or replacement.

Moreover, these smaller issues can stack up quickly if you start with a pickup instead of a cab-and-chassis.

How to Choose the Right Truck to Avoid Flatbed Upfitting Issues

1. Start with a Cab-and-Chassis

Cab-and-chassis trucks are built for upfitting. They feature straight frame rails, plug-and-play connectors, and fewer complex electronics. Choosing one prevents almost all sensor-related problems. Furthermore, they provide better structural alignment for custom beds.

2. Avoid Pickup-Only Packages

When you buy a pickup for a bed delete, avoid trims with park assist, blind-spot, rear cross-traffic, or 360° cameras. Instead, pick a simpler, upfitter-friendly trim.

3. Plan Camera Solutions Early

If you need a camera, we integrate one that works properly with your flatbed setup from day one. In addition, we ensure wiring remains protected and compatible with the truck’s system.

4. Think Ahead About Fit and Function

Choose wheelbase, body length, hitch style, and fuel fill locations before ordering the bed so the final setup fits perfectly. Similarly, planning ahead avoids costly modifications later.

Why Cab-and-Chassis Trucks Prevent Flatbed Upfitting Issues

  • Manufacturers mount electronics on the frame, not in the bed you remove.
  • Factory connectors simplify lighting and camera integration.
  • Cab-and-chassis trucks skip blind-spot and tailgate dependencies.
  • Consequently, they provide durability, towing strength, and work-ready upfit design.

Ultimately, cab-and-chassis trucks reduce installation time and eliminate most of the frustration that comes with modern pickup conversions.

FAQs About Flatbed Upfitting Issues

Can you relocate my blind-spot sensors?
Unfortunately, no. These rely on precise positioning that a flatbed cannot duplicate.

Will my 360° camera still work?
You still get a rear camera, but removing the tailgate disables 360° mode. However, we ensure your rear visibility remains clear and functional.

Why are my turn signals flashing fast?
The truck’s body control module detects a load change. Therefore, we correct it with proper resistors.

Is it better to start with a cab-and-chassis?
Yes. It’s designed for flatbeds, saves money, and avoids all the sensor headaches.
